Jyothi Basu,who ruled the Indian state of Bengal for a record 23 years,died at11.47am indian time 17th Jan.He was 95.
One of India's senior leaders, the charismatic Basu's sphere of influence extended far beyond his home state.He was denied a chance to become prime minister in 1996 when Basu's party (CPM) refused permission to lead a loose centre -Left alliance .
Basu died of multiple-or gan failure after a 16-day battle in a Kolkata Hospital.He is survived by his business man son Chandan . Basu'swife Kamal dided in 2003.
His death announced by a sobbing Biman Bose,a senior leader of Communist Party of India - Marxist(CPIM),plunged West Bengal into mourning . The state government has declared a holiday 18th Jan.as a mark of respect
Body Donated To SSKM Hospital
The Communist party leader will not be cremated but his body will be handed over to the state -run SSKM hospital tomorrow for research,the CPI-M announced .Basu's body will be taken in a procession tomorrow to the state secretariat Writer's Building and then to the West Bengal Assembly,where it will be kept for the public to pay homage.
